Bringing a nanny into your home is a big step—and the first day sets the tone for everything that follows. Whether it's your first nanny or your fifth, here’s how to make day one smooth, welcoming, and successful for everyone (including your little ones!).
1. Create a Warm Welcome
It doesn’t need to be fancy—just thoughtful. A quick home tour, a simple intro note from you, or even a favourite snack goes a long way in making your nanny feel part of the family.
2. Share the Essentials
Emergency contacts
Allergies or medical notes
Current daily routine or schedule
House rules and preferences
Anything that is important to your and your family
This makes everything clear without overwhelming them.
3. Introduce the Children Gently
Let your child take the lead. Be present for a while, then give them space to bond with the nanny. A slow, positive transition helps everyone feel safe and secure. Prior settling in days could help support this transition aswell.
4. Set Expectations Early
Be open about your communication style, what’s most important to you (e.g. routine, screen time, play), and when you’ll check in. Clear, kind communication builds trust fast.
5. Don’t Forget the Little Things
Things like:
Where to put dirty nappies/find clean clothes ect..
How to use the buggy
Wi-Fi code or kettle tips
All those small details make a big difference in helping your nanny feel confident and at home.
Most of all, trust the process. It might take a few days to find your rhythm, but with support, honesty, and kindness—you’ll get there. And of course, NANA is always here if you need a little backup along the way.
